Truth
The killer whales of the West Coast are highly regarded by Coastal First Nations but face many challenges. People from all walks of life are working hard to study and protect the Orcas in order to develop effective stewardship programs.
The Story
Coastal First Nations believe that the killer whale represents their ancestors and are their equals in the ocean. The WSÁNEĆ Leadership Council Society not only believes this but is also leading the way in supporting the lives of the killer whales.

They are in the beginning stages of creating a guardian program to help monitor the Resident Killer Whales. The program, led by David Dick, is called the WSÁNEĆ Marine Guardians. Their hope is to restore and uphold their sacred responsibility between the WSÁNEĆ and the KELȽOLEMEĆEN (Orcas).

Next we go on an acoustic journey underwater with Janie Wray, from the BC Whales Organization, who illustrates the impacts of noise pollution on whales created by increased shipping traffic.

Finally we end the season by reflecting on humanity’s place in nature, and how we reconcile our part in its destruction and our desire to protect it.
